Consensus by Default

Consensus by Default is a five channel self-generating soundscape that emerges from the sounds made in the space by viewers/listeners.  Vibrations are captured via contact microphones attached to the floor and/or walls and processed through custom software that features a system of self-feeding delays with randomly evolving parameters.  The sonic traces of visitors remain long after they leave, becoming part of an amalgam that incorporates past and present, and implies an imprecise foreshadowing of things to come.

Originally presented as part of a Manipulated Image Show – “memory and identity” – curated by Alysse Stepanian at Arena 1 Gallery, Santa Monica, CA (2012).
